Brownlow Goes Wild
When wildlife detection dog Casper loses his sense of smell, his owner calls in Sophie Gorrage and Brownlow. Sophie is a pet detective and Brownlow is trained to sniff out lost and stolen dogs and cats, but this assignment is very different. He’ll need to search for owl pellets and hedgehogs on a Sussex farm that a TV presenter is rewilding. It should be straightforward survey work, but when Sophie sees two figures in camouflage gear emerge from the tree line, carrying ropes and a large crate, she suspects they’re up to no good.
It’s only when a friend mentions that two climbers have tried to steal the Peregrine Falcon chicks from the tower of Chichester Cathedral, that Sophie realises what she witnessed is likely to have been a theft of young birds of prey. Now she and Brownlow find themselves in a menacing underworld, where Peregrines, Goshawks and even Eagles are being stolen for use in falconry – ‘the sport of kings’. The trade in wild caught birds is extremely lucrative and despite the pet detectives setting a clever trap for the thieves, soon it is they who become the prey.
